Friends of
Bosnia condemns bus bombing in Kosovo and calls on civic leaders
to take a more active role in preventing violence
Monday, February 19, 2001
Friends of Bosnia
is deeply disturbed by recent attacks on Serbs in Kosovo including
the bombing on Friday near Podujevo that killed ten Serb civilians
including children. Terrorist acts such as these will only further
delay a just and peaceful resolution to the wars that have engulfed
the Balkans since 1991 and will embolden extremists who would prefer
to continue ethnic cleansing on all sides.
This horrendous act of violence has demonstrated that KFOR alone
cannot stop terrorists. Full cooperation by all segments of society
including the media, political leaders, law enforcement agencies,
and the judiciary is necessary to create an environment where such
acts are considered inconceivable.
Friends of Bosnia calls on KFOR and UNMIK to use all resources available
to locate the perpetrators of this attack and calls on civic leaders
to take a more pro-active role in preventing such violence in the
future.
Based on statements from the Kosovar Albanian media, it is clear
that the violence is being openly condemned. FOB looks to the same
media to use their resources to foster an environment of restraint
within the Albanian community.
